Anthony of XX Teens talks about the unique operatic happening that is The Irrepressibles, and argues that they're one of the most original bands you're ever likely to see...
"The funny thing about this group is that it always seems that no-one’s ever heard of them. Which isn’t up there with the big atrocities in the world, but culturally it is a bit of a crime. I think it’s because they’re so different – they’re so themselves – that they don’t really fit into any box.
With the bands we’ve been reviewing for this guest editorial, we've always been able to say
“this one’s like Timbaland” or “this one’s like Interpol”. It’s as if there’s a cultural reference point to everything.
There are certain cultural reference points for The Irrepressibles too - you could say they’re a bit like Jeff Buckley, or Anthony and the Johnsons – but they’re really of their own.
The band are a ten piece centred around Jamie McDermott, who’s the brains behind it. It’s very orchestral, so I guess that’s why they don’t get to play in places like the Buffalo Bar. And they do their own gigs too, in interesting venues. So they’re really something to aspire to.
People always go on about ‘people who do their own thing’ – but when you get a band who genuinely do their own thing it takes a very long time for people to actually notice that. I think that at the moment they’re not really getting much exposure - they don’t have any friends who know friends who can do this and that for them - but they’ve been going for a long time. Probably as long as us.
Whereas some things you can imagine how it’s done, with them it’s just like – Wow. It’s absolute talent."
