The weekend's over, everyone has a furry tongue and we're not quite sure what time of day it is. But don't panic! Because here's the weekly singles review to bring you down to earth steadily, as penned by Rory Carroll...
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: DOES IT OFFEND YOU, YEAH? / DAWN OF THE DEAD (VIRGIN)
ZOMBIES! ZOMBIES ON SYNTHS! It’s hard to imagine that scenario ever being threatening, but DIOY,Y? have done their best to add some much needed credibility to the ‘Dawn Of The Dead’ moniker whilst delivering this brilliant slice of playful synth-pop.

THE HOUSEWIVES / CREAM (LITTLE FILTHY ANGELS)
North-east London’s favourite rump-shaking, hip-swerving indie outfit return with this, their rather delightful second single. ‘Cream’ has more hooks than a butcher’s shop window and will certainly shake you out of your Bank Holiday slumber. Buy it. Buy it now.
SUBWAYS / I WON'T LET YOU DOWN (INFECTIOUS)
Sorry guys, but you already have. The angry, pseudo-emo sound exhibited on this track doesn’t really suit the Subways and should probably be left to bands like Taking Back Sunday (who allegedly inspired this track). No matter how hard you try, you’ll still find yourself longing for the Subways to be the band they were one album ago.
BIFFY CLYRO / MOUNTAINS (14TH FLOOR)
‘Mountains’ is essentially Biffy Clyro’s attempt at a modern power-ballad – not in a Meatloaf way, but one that is sure to split diehard fans straight down the middle. Beggar’s Banquet stalwarts will scream “sell out!” and Puzzle-lovers will embrace it with open arms. Either way, it’s still far from their best.
GLASVEGAS / DADDY'S GONE (COLUMBIA)
Glasvegas are yet to produce what you might call a cheery tune, and this little ditty about a father figure ‘doing one’ doesn’t look likely to shake the trend. In an alternate timeline this single’s sweeping atmospherics would have been a fitting soundtrack to a last dance at a 1950s American prom, but as it stands it’s just a little… average.
ALPHABEAT / BOYFRIEND (EMI)
Lost: One soul. Last seen with a red man carrying a pitchfork and possibly exchanged for a record contract / questionable popularity amongst the masses, despite being distinctly average. If found, please return to Alphabeat, c/o Artrocker.com.
MYSTERY JETS / HALF IN LOVE WITH ELIZABETH / (SIXSEVENINE)
Is that… is that Simple Minds? Oh, it’s not, but should there ever be another generation of ‘Breakfast Club’-esque films, Mystery Jets might be able to provide the soundtrack. It’s melodically sound, a little bit 80s and, ultimately, a fairly inoffensive listen.
